Sugar rainbows! 8D

The 'results' of one of our experiments while I was at a Chemistry summer school at Oxford University. This was just a fun thing we did on the last day, it's not very scientific at all, it just looks really pretty ;u;

All it is is a set of sugar solutions (at the back) of differing concentration. We coloured them with dyes (food colouring works fine) and then added in each one slowly with a pipette to stop them mixing too much, and made a rainbow! The reason they stay separate is because the solutions have different densities - the one with the most sugar (red) is at the bottom, and all the less sense ones float on top of each other. Pretty nifty, right?

This is the best kind of Chemistry. I really want to ask if I can do this with the Year 7s next term. It's the kind of thing you can do in your kitchen - and trust me, I WILL be trying it in my kitchen.

Hm. I was wondering how that worked considering I could just TELL by looking at the chemicals that they were at different densities- IT IS MAGIC! O.O
